The Makeup Show New York
On Saturday May 14, 2011 I was full of excitement and energy and like a kid waiting for Christmas I could not sleep for the next day I was going to be attending THE MAKEUP SHOW NEWYORK!!!. I knew in order to get in line by 7:30 I had to be on the road by 4am and while I went to bed at 10pm with all the intentions of sleeping I just could not do it. I called my cousin and chatted with her about everything I was excited about. I babbled on about how I wanted to meet Jennifer James Beauty, Ms. Sherry Blossom,Sam fine etc. the classes I was going to take the vendors and everything else under the sun. Needless to say I think I slept for like 2hrs and I got up, gave myself a natural look with a bold lip and headed out the door to what was going to be the best 1-½ days of my life
Here is a picture of my look for the first day.
I finally arrived at the Metropolitan Pavilion after my GPS took me everywhere but where I wanted to be. I walked in torrential rain and my pants and shoes were completely soaked but I made it damnit! The line when I arrived was not that long, and it seemed I arrived once in time because 10 minutes later people started pulling up in taxi’s and the line tripled in size. I was very lucky to not have to wait outside in the rain. While I was in line I chatted with a couple of people and made the acquaintance of 2 lovely ladies who’d flown all the way in from Barbados and this was their first show as well! As I stood in line I looked around and took everything in. I was finally here; I was going to be the presence of so many people who I aspired to be like. If this isn’t what you called a blessing then I’m have no idea what you call it but I was humbled and overjoyed.
After going through the line and talking with the lady about how I bought a ticket for 2 days when their book only showed one I was finally given my 2nd day pass and I moved to the area with all the others waiting for the doors to open. I’d already written out all the booths I wanted to go first before it got ubber crazy. My top picks were Glamcor, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Face Atelier, and Inglot.
Once the doors opened there seemed to be a mad rush with everyone running to their first choices. The first booth I stopped at was Inglot. I made a customized palette of lipsticks and 2 eye shadows palettes while also grabbing some pigments, blushes and a lip stain. It got very busy very quickly and when I got home I realized instead of having 2 eye shadow palettes they gave me one eye shadow and one blush palette, the wrong shade pigment and the wrong shade lip stain but like Tim Gun says I was forced to “make it work” since I knew trying to return them the next day was going be a ubber hassle.
The next booth I went to was OCC, after following “Queen of Blending” on twitter and watching her youtube video’s I knew I had own some more lip tars. Now, I already own 4 but they were the ones being discontinued and I after seeing all the new colors I just had to have more. Unfortunately Lauren (queen of blending) was not at the booth but I was able to snap a pic of us together later on in the show after my class
The next booth I went to visit since it was right in front of OCC was a Crown Brushes. As a MUA you can never have enough brushes so lets just say I went there and racked up! I even got to meet Koren, here is a pic of he and I together. He was so nice!
Next stop Glamcor, but before I made it to Glamcor I stopped and listened to a seminar that was almost about to end. After the seminar ended I continued on my way to Glamcor but before I got there I was stopped some people handing flyers for Dinair. Dinair is a company that makes portable airbrushing machine and I remembered last summer trying out the Temptu Airbrushing machine and really liking it. I decided to go and check out some of the other airbrushing companies before making my final decision
Finally I made it Glamcor, now all the buzz has been on the Light Sets that Glamcor has and after being in many situations where the lighting was horrible and I was squinting opening blinds and taking off lamp shades in order to see I knew I had to be an owner of one of these babies. I’d already been emailing back and forth with Erik about the purchase of a Mobile Studio so I knew I had to check those out also. While I was there I was so elated to see Kevin James Bennett!!! I talked with him about the Glamcor rolling bag set and he explained to me how much of a heaven sent it had been to him and how he was able to store his entire kit in there. I asked him what he thought about the Glamcor rolling bag in comparison to the Zuca bag that everyone been raving about and he gave me his honest opinion being “ I am not a *bleep*ice skater”. I died laughing and after talking with one of the Glamcor founders Shana King I decided to go for the gusto and purchase the entire set. Rolling Bags, brush belt and the lights.
Now one thing I can definitely say about Glamcor is that they offer some of THE BEST customer service ever and they really get to know more about their customers then the fact that they do makeup and they bought a light set. I’ll tell you why in a minute. Once I told Shana that I planned on purchasing the entire kit she introduced me to Erik Kasier who is the co mastermind of Glamcor. Once Erik heard my name he knew exactly who I was. To him I was more than a customer, I was Melody who was working on curing Malaria…..
Now some of you who know me know that I am in my first year of my PhD program at Drexel University College of Medicine but I’d never had this conversation with him at all. This is exactly what I mean, when I say they really know their customer. I was so amazed and it made me want to purchase my Glamcor gear even more. And, what was even more amazing, Erik didn’t just run my credit card and say have a nice day. He sat me down and personally explained to me how the Glamcor set up really worked. Also, to show me how great the Glamcor bag really was he had me take all my purchases out of the bags I was carrying and put them into my Glamcor Bag!!! Talk about Amazing!!! Here is the video of Erik explaining how the Glamcor Rolling Bag works and here is a picture of the Glamcor Crew and myself. Guys if you’ve been on the fence about this purchase it is the best one you will ever make. I’ve already used my light set and the smaller bag when I went to do a client on Thursday!
After my fun with Glamcor I went to upstairs to attend the talk that Sam Fine was giving, before I made it I stopped on the 2nd floor just to browse around and ran into none other than SHERRY BLOSSOM BEAUTY!!! She looked so pretty with her green flower power look, unfortunately I was unable to get a picture with her but I accompanied her upstairs to the Sam Fine Talk. On the elevator Sherry started to introduce me to all the beauty blogger guru’s such as “Revealing Beaute” and “TheGorgeousBlog’. While she was doing the introductions and I was greeting everyone I missed her say the one person who’s class I’ve been dying to take “Jennifer James”. I turned around to greet another person and saw Mrs. James and quickly turned back around. I could not believe that the women who I’d been following on twitter and who’s word every word about makeup techniques I wrote down, the women who made me really focus on my eyebrows as more then just eyebrows was standing on the same elevator with me.
Now guys, I do not freeze up around celebrities. I’ve encountered too many and most of the time I’m so nonchalant that even once one asked me if I knew who they were lol but, Jennifer James had me at a loss for words and had me so nervous!! I finally scraped up enough courage to say tell her she was the reason I spent 30 minutes in the mirror one morning working on my eyebrows. She was very nice and I can’t wait to sit in on one of her classes to be a sponge and learn anything and everything that she has to teach!! Once we got off the elevator and made it to the Sam Fine Talk all the seats were taken but “Revealing Beaute” found me seat in the second row and for that I am very grateful.
